  • The truck works mainly outdoors on firm, prepared yard surfaces

  • The site cannot provide the electrical capacity required by the fleet
  • The needed capacity or configuration is not available in a suitable electric model
  • Fuel supply and compliant storage are already established

Describe the requirement with actual loads, shift length, surface, gradients, travel distance, and required availability. “Heavy outdoor work” is too broad to make the decision.
Also separate terrain from power source. A diesel counterbalance forklift is not automatically a rough-terrain machine. If the route includes deep ruts, unstable ground, soft soil, or significant obstacles, assess a telehandler or another purpose-built machine before choosing the engine.

 

When can LPG be a practical option?

LPG can suit operations that value quick cylinder changes and work mainly outdoors or across a controlled mix of outdoor and partially enclosed areas. It may be relevant when:

  • Charging windows are difficult to guarantee
  • Cylinder exchange fits the shift workflow
  • Compliant cylinder storage and a dependable supplier are available
  • The truck must move between yard and building
  • Indoor use is limited and supported by ventilation, maintenance, and exposure controls

LPG should not be treated as an emission-free indoor alternative. Combustion produces carbon monoxide and other pollutants. The proportion of indoor work, air volume, ventilation, truck condition, and local exposure rules all matter.

Diesel requires fuel delivery, compliant storage or off-site refueling, spill prevention, and emergency procedures. Electric requires suitable electrical capacity, approved chargers, protected charging points, and a disciplined charging workflow.
