BACKHOE LOADER ATTACHMENTS

There are many attachments for backhoes. Depending on your mounting setup and hydraulic capability, common backhoe attachments include: 

• Buckets (general-purpose, trenching and grading/cleanup) 
• Hydraulic breaker (application dependent) 
• Auger (application dependent) 
• Grapple  
• Compactor or compaction wheel (application dependent) 
• Blades (application dependent) 
• Pallet forks (application dependent) 

Backhoe attachments are used across a wide range of work, including: 

• Trenching and excavation 
• Utility installation and repair 
• Breaking concrete or asphalt 
• Drilling holes for posts, piers and footings 
• Backfilling and light grading 
• Material handling (pallets, pipe, supplies) 
• Site cleanup and seasonal tasks (where applicable) 

Bobcat® backhoe-compatible attachments can include digging and trenching buckets, hydraulic breakers, augers and other job-specific tools, depending on the backhoe model. The right lineup comes down to using attachments that are approved for backhoe loader fitment and match your coupler/mount and hydraulic specifications.

To choose the right attachment for a backhoe, start by reviewing the list of approved, compatible attachments for your specific backhoe model. Then narrow your options based on how and where you work: 

• The task and finish level – trenching, demolition, drilling, handling or cleanup 
• Space constraints – access points, tight work areas and reach needs
• Ground and material conditions – soil type, rock, debris, abrasive material and surface sensitivity
• Machine limits and connection needs – attachment size and weight vs. rated limits, plus required hydraulic flow and pressure

Always follow your operator’s manual and the attachment instructions. In general: 

1. Park on level ground, lower the attachment to the ground and set the parking brake. 
2. Shut down the machine and relieve hydraulic pressure (if using hydraulics). 
3. Align the coupler and mount to the attachment and connect or lock it (pins or coupler locks fully seated). 
4. Connect hydraulic couplers if required (clean couplers first and make sure they click fully into place). 
5. Lift the attachment slightly and do a low-idle function test; check for leaks and confirm the attachment is securely locked. 

Always follow your operator’s manual and then stick to these everyday best practices: 

• Do a quick pre-use check: locks and pins, hoses and couplers, wear parts and guards. 
• Use smooth, controlled movements and keep loads low when traveling. 
• Stay within rated limits and keep the machine stable (use stabilizers where required). 
• For hydraulic tools, run the correct engine speed and flow setting and avoid forcing the attachment. 
• Shut down and relieve hydraulic pressure before adjusting, clearing jams or swapping tools.
