Working Under a Carport: How the Bobcat S450 Proved Its Worth in Restricted Space
Published on: 28 August 2026
When space in a residential backyard gets tight, contractors usually resort to micro-equipment. But Austrian landscaper Josef Brunner proved that larger compact machinery can thrive in tight quarters when he paired a Bobcat S450 Skid-Steer Loader with a Bobcat E10z Mini Excavator.
During the renovation of a 50-square-meter garden and terrace near Vienna, a carport with just 2.10 meters of overhead clearance presented a major bottleneck. Every cubic meter of excavated earth and fresh aggregate had to pass underneath it.

The low overhead height beneath the sloping carport created a serious logistical puzzle for Brunner.
“Normally, I would have planned to use a dumper. But even that would have been too high, having to duck your head on every pass isn't just exhausting, it's unsafe,” recalls the landscaper from Münchendorf, near Vienna.
Local Bobcat dealer Eisenwagen Baumaschinen GmbH in Himberg recommended the S450 Skid-Steer Loader as the ideal solution. Standing at an overall height of just two meters, the S450 cleared the carport roof easily while offering high operational versatility.
“It is perfectly suited for working in tight conditions,” says Brunner, known online to his followers as “Der Bagger Peppi.”
For landscaping professionals, the loader's agility is a core advantage on constrained jobsites: “Spinning and maneuvering on the spot, strong lift capacity, and compatibility with a wide range of attachments make these loaders indispensable,” adds Christian Czeczil, Head of Rental at Eisenwagen.
Efficient Material Handling
Efficient Material Handling
Work began with breaking up the old terrace slabs and hauling away approximately 45 cubic meters of excavated soil. Following excavation, 12 cubic meters of gravel were brought in and spread as a sub-base layer for new paving.
Thanks to the S450, waste material was loaded directly over the high sides of container trucks parked out front.
“With a dumper, we could only move material from point A to point B, which is much slower and more labor-intensive,” explains Brunner. “The S450 makes loading and handling material far faster and easier.”
Compact Build Meets Impressive Lift Height
The combination of compact dimensions and vertical reach proved decisive on site.
“The machine is exceptionally well balanced. Even with a full bucket, it doesn't rock or bounce on its wheels, and it reaches an impressive lift height of 2.8 meters. That made tipping straight into the truck containers seamless. With a dumper, we would have been forced to drive into the containers from the rear to unload.”
Working alongside the E10z Mini Excavator, the S450 formed a two-machine team that completed the entire groundworks job in just one day.
Maximum Efficiency in Minimal Space
“I know many landscapers, especially younger business owners, are hesitant to test larger compact equipment in tight spots. But skid-steer loaders genuinely pay off. Just give one a try!” advises Brunner.
The project demonstrates that with the right equipment setup, even demanding tasks in tight spaces can be completed smoothly, precisely, and ahead of schedule.
