HOW TO CHOOSE A RIPPER OR SCARIFIER
Bobcat® rippers and scarifiers are built for one job: breaking up tough material so you can dig, remove or regrade faster. The right choice comes down to two things – your carrier and what you’re trying to rip.
What Machine You're Using
These two attachments don’t overlap much, because they’re designed for different carriers:
- Front-mount scarifier: built for skid-steer loaders and compact track loaders
- Ripper: built for compact excavators
Once you know your machine, match the tool to the material and the type of finish you need.
When to Choose the Front-Mount Scarifier
Pick the scarifier when you’re ripping and loosening material across a surface, especially when you want consistent depth and fast coverage.
It’s a strong fit for:
- Ripping asphalt before removal.
- Breaking hard-packed soil so it’s easier to dig or regrade.
- Prepping tough ground for landscaping and site work.
Why it works:
- Adjustable depth skids let you preset a steady digging depth.
- Reverse operation helps you bite in and maintain control.
- Manual lock can hold teeth in a stored position for continuous scarifying.
When to Choose the Ripper
Pick the ripper when you’re attacking dense material that needs deep, concentrated force – like frozen soil, hard-packed ground, or stubborn layers you need to fracture before digging.
It’s ideal for:
- Frozen ground and hard soil where buckets struggle to break in.
- Tough, compacted material that needs a single-point “tear” action.
- Jobs where you’ll rip first, then clean up with a bucket.
Why it works:
- Single-point replaceable tooth for strong penetration.
- Heavy-duty gussets and reinforced shank for ripping power and durability.
- After loosening material, you can swap to a bucket to finish the excavation and cleanup.
Quick Checklist
- Carrier: loader (scarifier) vs. compact excavator (ripper).
- Material: asphalt/hard surface layer (scarifier) vs. frozen ground/deep compaction (ripper).
- Control: need preset depth and consistent passes (scarifier) vs. maximum bite and penetration (ripper).
- Next step: ripping only, or ripping + bucket cleanup (often ripper).
If you’re not sure which tool matches your machine and typical jobs, your local Bobcat dealer can help confirm compatibility and set you up with the right attachment for the work you do most.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are ripper and scarifier attachments?
Rippers and scarifiers are ground-prep attachments designed to penetrate and break up hard surfaces before you dig or grade. A ripper uses a single heavy-duty tooth to tear into compacted or frozen ground, while a front mount scarifier uses multiple teeth to score and loosen material like hard-packed soil or asphalt.
What are ripper and scarifier attachments used for?
Ripper and Scarifier attachments are used to pre-loosen tough material so your bucket, blade or other tool can work faster and with less strain. Common uses, but not limited to, include:
- Breaking up frozen or hard-packed soil.
- Ripping asphalt for removal.
- Loosening ground for trenching, landscaping and excavation.
- Reducing bounce and improving control before finishing passes.
What types of scarifier and ripper attachments are available?
The types of scarifier and ripper attachments available are the following:
- Ripper attachment (compact excavators): Single-point, replaceable tooth designed for deep penetration in frozen, hard-packed or compacted ground.
- Front-mount scarifier attachment (skid-steer loaders and compact track loaders): Multiple scarifying teeth with adjustable depth skids for consistent loosening and surface preparation.
What does a ripper or scarifier do?
Rippers and scarifiers function differently:
- Ripper: Concentrates force through a single heavy-duty tooth to crack, tear and fracture dense material. It is used to break through frozen ground, hard-packed soil and stubborn layers so a bucket can penetrate faster and excavation can move with less machine strain.
- Scarifier: Uses multiple teeth to score and loosen the top layer across a wider working path. For a scarifier, the “surface” is the material layer you are preparing, such as hard-packed soil, gravel and similar base material or asphalt prior to removal. It is used to rough up and break apart that layer for easier digging, grading, reconditioning and cleanup with fewer passes.
How do I choose the right ripper and scarifier attachment?
Pick based on your machine and the material you’re attacking:
- Choose a ripper if you’re on a compact excavator and need maximum penetration in frozen ground, tight trenches or hard-packed soils.
- Choose a front mount scarifier if you’re on a skid-steer or compact track loader and want to rip/score a wider area for asphalt removal or site prep with controlled depth.
If you’re unsure, match by carrier compatibility, mounting style, and the job’s surface type – your Bobcat dealer can help confirm fit and setup.
Are scarifier and ripper attachments interchangeable or universal?
Scarifier and ripper attachments are not universally compatible. Fit depends on machine type (loader vs. excavator), mounting interface, hydraulic requirements and model compatibility. A ripper made for a compact excavator won’t mount to a skid-steer, and loader scarifiers are built for Bob-Tach-equipped carriers. The quickest way to confirm is to check the attachment’s approved carrier list or contact your local Bobcat dealer for support.
