What’s the difference between a skid-steer and a track loader?
The primary difference between a compact track loader and a skid-steer loader is the undercarriage. Skid-steer loaders run on wheels, while compact track loaders run on tracks. That affects traction, ground pressure, and often rated operating capacity (ROC).
Compact track loaders spread the machine’s weight across the tracks, which increases traction and stability on soft or uneven ground and can allow higher ROC on many comparable models.
Skid-steer loaders prioritize speed and maneuverability on firm surfaces, but with less flotation than tracks – so ROC and stability can be more limited in slick or soft conditions. ROC varies by model, so compare specs within the same size class to find the best fit for your work.
To get more information, refer to the Compact Track Loader & Skid-Steer Loader Buyer’s Guide.
How do I choose between a compact track loader and a skid-steer loader?
You choose between a compact track loader and a skid-steer loader based on your ground conditions and the type of work you do most. Tracks typically provide more traction and flotation, while wheels typically deliver more speed and maneuverability on firm surfaces. In many comparable size classes, compact track loaders can also offer higher rated operating capacity (ROC) thanks to added stability from the track undercarriage, but ROC varies by model, so always compare specs.
Choose a compact track loader if you:
- Work on soft, muddy, sandy, snowy or uneven ground
- Need more traction and lower ground pressure (less sinking/rutting)
- Spend time on slopes or conditions where stability matters
- Want strong pushing performance and confidence in rough terrain
Choose a skid-steer loader if you:
- Work mostly on firm, hard surfaces (concrete, asphalt, packed gravel)
- Prioritize speed, quick maneuvering and tight work areas
- Want a simpler undercarriage and straightforward maintenance
- Need a strong, versatile machine for general-purpose work on solid footing
