HOW TO CHOOSE A SNOWBLOWER ATTACHMENT
A Bobcat snowblower makes short work of deep drifts and heavy snowfall. But the “right one” usually comes down to your carrier and how you prefer to clear snow (forward, reverse, or tight maneuvering). Start with what you’re running, then fine-tune by surface type, snow conditions and where you want the snow to go.
Match the Snowblower to Your Machine
These four options are primarily carrier-driven:
- Loaders, Toolcat utility work machines and telehandlers (snowblower attachment): Hydraulic-driven attachment built for driveways, lots and sidewalks, with features designed to handle hard-packed snow and keep snow moving smoothly.
- Compact tractors (front-mount snowblower): PTO-powered, front-mount design for forward blowing, with hydraulically controlled height adjustment and chute rotation.
- Compact tractors (3-point snowblower implement): Rear Category 1, 3-point mount for blowing while driving in reverse; manual chute rotation (optional hydraulic rotator available).
- Articulating tractors (27x48 snowblower): Purpose-built blower sized and tuned for that platform, with a large opening and wide chute rotation for controlled discharge.
How Will You Operate?
Your comfort and visibility matter, especially on long pushes.
- Want the best forward visibility while blowing? Go front- mount (compact tractor). You’re working in front of you, not looking over your shoulder.
- Want to keep your front-end loader installed? Go 3-point (compact tractor). It’s designed so you don’t need to remove your loader, and it’s a great fit for long driveway runs.
- Need to throw snow high, far, or into a truck? Look at the loader, Toolcat utility work machine or telehandler snowblower with a truck- loading chute option for hauling snow away.
Consider Your Snow and Surface Type
Different designs help when conditions get ugly:
- Hard-packed snow and ice: Prioritize features like aggressive auger teeth and a reversible, replaceable wear edge that bites in.
- Reducing clogging and keeping snow flowing: Look for designs with a rounded intake and increased intake capacity for faster removal.
- Directing snow precisely: If you’re working near buildings, cars or walkways, choose a setup with easy chute control and wide rotation range so you can place snow where you want it.
Also, consider the surfaces you’ll be working on. If you clear on a mix of pavement and gravel, you’ll want adjustability in the form of adjustable skid shoes and a replaceable cutting edge.
Quick Checklist
- Carrier type: compact tractor, compact loader, Toolcat utility work machine, telehandler or articulating tractor
- Power source: PTO (tractor) vs. hydraulic (loaders)
- Operating preference: forward blowing vs. reverse blowing
- Surface: pavement, pavers, gravel, mixed
- Snow conditions: light powder, wet/heavy, hard-packed, deep drifts
- Discharge needs: tight areas, long throw, or truck loading
Once you’ve narrowed it down, your Bobcat dealer can help confirm compatibility (PTO horsepower or hydraulic flow requirements), sizing, and control options so your snowblower shows up ready to move snow on day one.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a snowblower attachment or implement?
A snowblower attachment is a machine-powered snow removal tool that uses an auger and impeller to pull in snow and throw it through a chute – clearing faster than pushing and moving snow where you need it.
Multiple snowblower attachments exist in the industry with the traditional snowblower, front-mount snowblower (tractors), 3-Point snowblower (tractors), articulating tractor snowblower and more.
What is a snowblower attachment or implement used for?
A snowblower attachment or implement is used to clear driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and roads by removing snow and throwing it away from the cleared area, especially helpful for deep drifts, heavy snowbanks and hard-packed snow.
What types of snowblower attachments or Implements are available?
Snowblower attachments are available in several types designed around Bobcat carrier platforms and mounting styles, including:
- Hydraulic snowblower attachment (loaders, Toolcat utility work machines and telehandlers): High-capacity intake and chute options for jobsite snow removal.
- Front-mount snowblower (compact tractors): PTO-powered with forward visibility, hydraulic chute and height control.
- 3-point snowblower (compact tractors): Rear PTO implement that clears while traveling in reverse (often without removing the front loader).
- Articulating tractor snowblower (27x48): Purpose-built blower sized for the articulating tractor platform.
How do I choose the right snowblower attachment or implement?
The right snowblower attachment is chosen by matching the attachment to your carrier first, then sizing and equipping it for your snow, surface and discharge needs.
- Match the blower to your machine: PTO-driven options for compact tractors vs. hydraulic options for loaders, Toolcat utility work machines or telehandlers vs. articulating tractor models.
- Pick your operating style:
- Front-mount for forward operation, better visibility and easier control. (loaders, tractors, toolcat and telehandlers)
- 3-point if you want to keep the front-end loader installed and don’t mind blowing while backing up. (tractors)
- Consider snow conditions and area size: Deeper, heavier snow and larger areas benefit from the right width and the power your machine can support.
- Think about snow placement: If you need to throw higher, farther or load trucks, choose the chute setup that fits the job.
It’s also important to contact your Bobcat dealer to confirm compatibility.
Are snowblower attachments interchangeable or universal?
Bobcat snowblower attachments can be compatible across multiple Bobcat carriers and models within the same platform type, but they are not universal across all machines. Compatibility depends on the carrier category and power source (PTO vs. hydraulic), plus mounting interface, hydraulic flow/pressure (for hydraulic models) or PTO/driveline requirements (for tractor models).
- Hydraulic snowblower attachments are built to work across compatible compact loaders, Toolcat™ utility work machines and telehandlers (model- and configuration-dependent), which gives fleets flexibility to run the same attachment on different approved machines.
- PTO snowblowers are carrier-specific: front-mount and 3-point snowblowers are exclusive to compact tractors because they rely on tractor PTO power and tractor mounting systems, not loader auxiliary hydraulics.
To stay safe and get the performance you expect, always confirm approved carrier fitment and requirements for your exact model/configuration (mounting interface, PTO/hydraulic specs, and any control kits) before swapping or purchasing.
